This is a pretty good game for an MMO, he he. I really like the idea of playing in the Conan universe, which AoC does a wonderful job of recreating. You can group if you like, or pretty much solo if you prefer. I mostly solo unless I get invited to group. Sometimes you really do have to group up in order to complete a quest. I play on a PvE server.
The two best things about the game in my opinion are the combat and the graphics. As far as the general gameplay, it is pretty much standard MMO fare. The graphics are not cartoony like World of Warcraft at all. Much more gritty and real. Everything from primitive towns and villages to the capital city are rendered in detail that rivals even a single player RPG. You will really need a powerhouse of a rig to run AoC maxed out, especially if you want to play in DX10. I play in DX9 and the game is still pretty stunning. My comp is a i7 920, 6GB ram, Win 7 64, and a rather dated HD 4850 512mb vidcard. If I replaced that card with 57XX or 58XX 1gb I could probably run the game in DX10.
So the game looks great, especially when you get off the starter area of Tortage and into some really stunning, wide open vistas. If you are a fan of the REH Conan stories, you will appreciate it even more. Walking around I think, this is what REH had in mind, this is what Hyboria looks like!
The combat in the game is really the high point of the gameplay. At least if you are playing a melee character because you have all control over where that weapon strikes your opponent. If you want to win a even matched fight, concentration and alertness will be paramount to victory. If you become lazy or sloppy handling that weapon because you are a little tired, you will get your hat handed to you! You cannot autopilot the combat in AoC, you must stay on top of it. It makes for exciting encounters!
That is my take on the game after bringing my Conquer to Lvl 33. I am glad I gave the free trial a chance because playing in the Conan universe is pretty cool. I am even reading a book of Howard’s stories to kind go along with the game. There are NPCs to be found in AoC right out of REH’s books. It is kind of an extra perk if you are a fan of the books, especially because the transition from pulp fiction to MMO was so well done.

I honestly don’t get people who review MMOs this way. I guess the whole “If it’s not WOW, it’s crap” crowd is bigger than I thought.AOC offers many things that makes the comparison shallow at best. The graphics are astounding. The group missions are truly awe-inspiring and the guild and consequence system to deal with ganking is both elegant and fun.Don’t listen to other reviewers! With a game this cheap, you should check it out. I loved it!
I can’t believe there aren’t more people playing this game. It has beautiful graphics, which I can understand can create a hardship for those without a near top line PC. But I know there are many people like me that have a top line PC that want a game that gives them the performance they desire. The story flows just like a book and the controls are spot on.
I went into this game in May of 2008 thinking it could actually complete with warcraft. By the time I left in Jan of 2009. Funcom totally failed to live up to the hype and promises that were made. The first MMO with direct 10x was never released as of early jan of 2009. My biggest issue with it was when you got over level 70 not even 80, there wasnt really much out there to do. Oh the game itself wasnt bad if you dont mine quests up to the mid 50′s after that good luck. and as Somebody already pointed out the selling price of a used one is now .58 cents? Thats bad enough-now it is possible that Funcom maybe able to turn this around, but a month back on G4 the cable channel it was reported that Funcom had problems. For all who want to try this i would see what happens by June of this year, either go back to warcraft, try Lord of the Rings or wait for the next patch of MMO’s to be released Fallen Earth, Star Trek Online or Star Wars which supposely is due around 2011.
If you value your money dont waste it on this product. The product deserves 0 stars out of five. Unfortunatly the lowest ranking you can give it in a review is 1.
I bought this game after I played the free trial. It is fun, challenging and a very beautiful game. It’s system requirements are rather large, but it is a fun game if you have the rig to play it.
I purchased this game when it first came out, but I never installed it due to heavy EVE Online and World of Warcraft (WoW) play at the time. Well, I finally installed the game this weekend after WoW exhaustion (EVE was exhausted a long time ago). In defense of WoW and EVE, I have played many fun hours (even days!) online with those games, but there comes a time when you need a break. Age of Conan has so far been an AWESOME break from the others.
Install and Patch Time: Almost as long as WoW. You can walk away and get a sandwich while it is loading.
Server Population: They have four servers up right now and all have a healthy population on them (there are eight more servers in Europe). Two of the US servers are PvP (Player vs. Player) and two are PvE (Player vs. Environment). One of the PvP servers is also a Role Playing server. This is the server I joined. I never played on a PvP or RP server before. What does “healthy population” mean? From where I have been in the game, there are many players running around with many different guild names on them. The population is mature and helpful too. I’m sure there is the odd annoying character out there, but I haven’t run into him yet (yet!). With most MMOs, it is a male dominated game, but there are females playing as I have found out from the forums.
Character Creation: This aspect of the game was pretty cool. You start off on a slave ship and have many options. Your character may look a little weird while creating it, but when in-game you will look normal. Eventually you will get the hang of it as I did.
Starting Area (Tortage): This is a moderately sized area with a few connected zones for PvP and quests. It includes a solo storyline series of quests that held my attention. I have been through Tortage three times now and I have found that the storyline quests are a little different for each class of character. This was refreshing since all new characters must go through this area before entering the `real’ world of AoC. Overall, my experience with this area was fun and it did a good job teaching me the basics of the game as I played.
Rest of the world: The game-play is essentially the same as Tortage. The graphics are absolutely beautiful in some areas. The major cities look nice. The only disappointment I had was that in Tortage the NPCs would speak their script. In the rest of the world it seems that only a few NPCs will do that. I guess for the sake of hard drive space this wasn’t practical, but it would have been nice.
Game Play: Certain aspects of game play are class dependent, although there are things common to all. For instance, melee attacks are activated by hitting one of three buttons – attack left, attack center, attack right. You can also defend right, center, or left. Casting characters… cast spells. Some mages have undead or demonic minions that help them. Melee classes also have combo moves that do more damage and give you a chance for an awesome finishing fatality move. You can chop off heads, put your battleaxe into someone and then taunt them, etc. To see these fatalities, go to You Tube and search for “Age of Conan – Fatality Collection in HD!” (by Morgenmuffl) and enjoy the show. Be sure to change it from 360p to 720p for the full effect! Those videos alone make me want to stop this review and jump back into the game.
Support: I have found solutions for problems online and have not needed to contact FUNCOM. Just Google search the problem and find the solution on the forums or another website. There haven’t been any real problems with the game to warrant a FUNCOM contact. I was actually expecting more problems from all the old reviews. Apparently they fixed most of that stuff (another reason I waited to play the game, all the initial bugs).
Parting Words: It is a shame that so many people wrote poor reviews after launch (and it is a shame that FUNCOM launched the game in such a poor state). This game, as it is now at the time of this review, is fun, entertaining, appealing to the eye, VERY appealing to the eye, and in some cases quite comical with the storyline. I’m surprised at the amount of fun I am having with this game quite frankly. Try it out. For the current Amazon price, you have little to lose. And who knows, perhaps (like me) you will fall in love with it. [Quick note, Or you can buy the new expansion Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer, and play. No, the original game is not required if you buy the expansion. The expansion includes the original game.]
This is a fun and challenging MMO, graphics are great, and the 7.1 sruuround sound is awsome, great music, oeverall a great game.
If you want the worst of MMO experiences, this may be it. Annoying storyline, difficult user interface, and an unsophisticated client base.
Un-installed and canceled in less than 24 hours.
