Ok i am going to review this game not just on a current quick play. I’ll go in depth as much as i can so bear with me please.
I will be the first to say this game has had many issues and has been fighting an uphill battle on a hill made of ice. I know.. i stayed none the less (largly due to i beat GW and GW2 isnt out yet… and i am a mythic loyalist despite their many many many faults). They have had serious issues with bugs, balance and grinding, among other things. thankfully much of it has been fixed and more is coming, very soon! I won’t sit here and tell you it’s the perfect game because it’s not but i will tell you whats wrong has been wrong and whats been fixed and is being fixed now or in the future.
———————————————
First thing, i’ve been on WAR for over a year now and i am dead sick of people comparing it to WoW. It is NOT WoW get over it.
1. wow has been out for years… multiple expansions and time to fix stuff. WAR has been out barely a year. Compare WoW at 1 year to WAR at one year. At 1 year WAR has more content and fewer bugs than WoW… looks promising to me but most people have gotten so used to zombifying to an old game that has been in the market for years they are to impatient to wait for a new game to fix itself thus slowing down the fixing process when everyone impatiently leaves thus preventing the compony from having enough money to support all of its employies…
2. It is PvP primarily not PvE primary… so dont bother grinding for PvE and then complaining it’s a grind fest… it isn’t you can start PvP right off the bat, no grind and if you so choose you dont even have to touch PvE at all, as you can level in PvP as well.
Ok it’s been a year what now what then?
1. Ok there are still bugs but they aren’t all the same they are new bugs from new content. And they are fairly minor bugs that hardly effect gameplay. Not to mention i see bugs vanish every couple of weeks as they get fixed.
2. They have had more content added, not just simple oh hey here’s a new quest or armor piece but an entire expansion worth. Guess what. It’s free… as of right now WAR is aiming at making their expansions free, they have considered making a pay for expansion maybe (i stress maybe) somewhere down the road but likely keep it at free. Entire zones and classes have been added. And i expect new races even in the next year or… (hopefully not) two years.
3. Revamped: The game is being revamped based on player, not developer but player feedback. RvR and PvP has change drasticaly making it run smoother and quicker… no more wasting 24 hours to take a capitol city.
4. Revamped: Major complaint was class balance. This is gonna be fixed in the next month. They are putting through a major patch that will make the classes on order and destro sides mirror eachother more closely like they were meant to. Same skills diferent names and apearance… but same skills essentialy. Also crowd control is finaly being fixed and is no longer the mass spam nest it has been. It will be harder to get, have more requirements to trigger, and will be more limited class wise (most classes will lose most of their crowd control, tanks will gain crowd control making them better at their job).
Leveling and costomization did suck… end game was lacking and what was with the repetitiveness?
1. Ok if you are playing PvE and you were so sick of hitting that brick wall at one tier or another… they fixed it… leveling is much smoother like it was meant to be…
2. Customization is getting much better. There are more trophies, armor sets (and more armor set design variation), and even mounts. granted some are a little harder to get than others but that’s how it should be… some stuff easy some hard…
3. Even the repetetiveness as fallen down… now the live events are more frequent and more varied… dont worry though they aren’t one time only things… They plan to bring them back…
4. end game… the end game has been revamped so much… now things are easier so you can access more of the end game content, and more end game contect has been added (for example an entire continent of new stuff)
Ok the bugs, population and the graphics.
1. i hear people quit due to crappy graphics. that is no longer the case. the graphics are much much better than they were in clossed beta and early game… and rumors abound about another graphics update.
2. Graphics have been ironed out more solidly so there is far less lag… much much better.
3. Population issues are next to mute now. Before it was sad… the server was maxed on pop, and yet you could hardly find anyone. Well they finaly fixed it. They merged most of the servers into i believe 7 servers, and raised the pop cap tramendously. I never log on and find things feal dead… lots of RvR and PvP, or PvE its amazing!!!
4. The bugs are so much less than they once were… most of them are hardly even noticable much less effecting your play. Server stabability can get 50/50 right after a major update to the game but usualy gets fixed in 1-2 weeks… or at least lessened till they find a more permanent fix.
———————-
In End Note… the game is tremendously much better than it was… much much better. I did dock a star due to the bugs and such we still have but with the fixes going through right now and as fast as they are working i know this game can pick itself back up. (as long as they don’t let EA rush them anymore). I would also like to note that they are under new management now, and the new management so far is much smarter… they have been more willing to tell us the players stuff straitforward with less beating around the proverbial bush. And they listen to the players much more than before. It is also promissing to note that another major compony is jumpin on the wagon and depending on how they handle things we may see things spead up as well on the game.. Looks promissing… can’t wait to see what happens in the next year after the last years performance.

I am writing this review because I see all the old 2008 reviews which really don’t do justice to the bonecrunching, blood and gore awesomeness of this game. I didn’t play Age of Conan (AoC) when it came out in 2008 because I was in the middle of my 2 year World of Warcraft (WoW) stint. I have to assume that however messed up AoC was at launch, most of those problems have been fixed because I haven’t encountered any of the problems mentioned in the old 2008 reviews. I really enjoyed playing WoW, but after two years I felt that I’d “accomplished” all I wanted to in that game (in terms of PvP, endgame raiding, flying mounts, armor sets, rep grinds, etc.) and I wanted to try something new. I was scared off of AoC last year because of all the bad reviews. But out of sheer curiosity and because it was free, I played AoC’s free trial this past summer and found it an amazing game with great content for mature players. I really like this game and I’m looking forward to the expansion Rise of the Godslayer. To keep it short and to the point:
Pros
* Awesome graphics – they are realistic and can be violent, sexy, or gritty.
* Great storyline and PvE content – the kids won’t be patient enough to read through it, but I think that’s a plus because it keeps the less mature element out of the AoC community
* No excessive grinding: Whenever you kill mobs or collect stuff, it leads somewhere and you progress through areas to reach a goal while you are killing them. It is not mindless killing and boredom. It feels like quests have a point.
* Fun combat: you can’t just mash buttons. You have to pay attention to combos but it is not too complex. It’s just very engaging and requires some skill.
* No bots or gold farmers! To me, this is huge. While in the starting area of Tortage, I got about 3-4 pieces of in-game mail suggesting I go to a website to buy AoC gold. They were easily deleted. There’s no gold spam in the global chat on my server. I haven’t received any spam like that since I left the starting area. Funcom has done a great job with making resource gathering difficult or impossible for bots. Gold farmers ruining WoW’s economy is another of the reasons I left that game.
Cons
* Low server population except for Wiccana and Cimmeria servers: People are probably scared off because of the bad reviews from launch. Funcom needs to come out with another free trial period to make up for their poorly executed launch, apparently. I hope that with free trials and the launch of the expansion, this game will grow into a viable franchise that can survive for a while because it really is good now.
* Somewhat limited PvP opportunities before reaching level cap at 80 because of low server population, I have not seen a lot of chances to engage in meaningful PvP while leveling up since the mini-games are not running 24-7 like in WoW. I mean they are “running” but not enough people to sign up for them at off peak hours. I really like WoW’s battlegrounds and areas like Wintergrasp and Isle of Conquest. Warhammer also has engaging PvP scenarios (though I think the lack of PvE is why Warhammer is not doing as well as they would like). I had over 14K lifetime PvP kills on my main WoW character, so you can guess that I like PvP a lot. I wish AoC would implement some sort of cross-server PvP system like WoW, but they have a resource problem (apparently) and have indicated that it is not a priority at this time. I hope that with more players each server there will be increased action in the PvP minigames and more siege opportunities, which sound like they would be amazing fun. Maybe some faction based PvP would help. I heard AoC will introduce this in the expansion (but no release date yet).
Bottom line: This game is so cheap! Try it and you will get your money’s worth. Admittedly, I want more people to play for my own reasons, but I think most mature gamers will appreciate the AoC community and have a lot of fun with this game as I have been doing for the past 4 months.
Rise of the Godslayer has no release date because Funcom apparently doesn’t want to repeat the fiasco of AoC’s launch last year. That’s a good thing. However, if they want to keep this franchise alive, you would think they will get it out by some time in the first half of next year, the sooner the better. I have not played Aion yet and I may give it a try, but for me, AoC is the best game out there now. I like the blood and grittiness in combat compared to how neat, clean and stylized Aion looks in the preview videos, though. Just depends on what you like.
I played Age of Conan:Hyborian Adventures…after listeng to some people one day talk about it owhen I was playing World of Warcraft….some had good and bad things to say about it, To me it is a good game graphics are good and looks to fallow Conan’s world. I did have one small bit of trouble when exploring I fell into ditch or cannel with water in it that I was not able to climb out of…dispite there was a ramp leading up but when I walked on it, it was not solid..since it was at the begaining of the game just delted the chracter and started over again.
aside from that small problem the game and story lines Are well done and I was impressed…I recommened this game. to any who wish to try it out.
Bought and tried to install and run AoC on my new high end computer late last year. No success. AoC did not support Vista DX10 and it got nowhere in Windows XP mode. Then a couple of months ago I got the Funcom e-mail inviting my return for another try. Big improvements they said. They were right. Runs great in 2560×1600 rez and only a few intermittant crashes resulting from my pushing the performance envelope.
I’m playing on a PvE server but plan to hunt around for some PvP action (select locations) because once you reach lvl 80, there is not much left to do with your character except PvP or create new characters of different professions and do it all over again with new skills. The AoC map is rather extensive with multiple distant locations and accompanying quests that sometimes make you wish you brought a group with you, if you didn’t, because that dungeon with mobs at your level all fight like bosses. Elite mobs are not identified and you can find yourself in a lot of badly mismatched situations when the fighting begins. Funcom needs to fix this.
I reached level 80 in seven weeks going about 80% solo mostly with quests. No need to buy weapons or armor because the drops and quest rewards are better than what you can buy. Money is not a problem if you regularly sell your inventory of drop and quest items you don’t need. At level 40 you can buy a horse and do everything from horseback but fight. Having a mount improves on a rather crude travel system that is a far cry from, say, Guild Wars or Oblivion travel. But unlike Lineage II, for example, AoC travel is free.
I find the game to be a blast with friendly and mature players. The guild I joined was new but can still find fellow guild members in the more populated areas. In some of the more distant areas I’m lucky to run across more than a couple of players. There are always plenty of mobs, however.
If you’ve been spoiled by fancy Lineage II armor or the wide selection of colorful Guild Wars armor you may find the rather dull AoC armor lacking. All the player characters look like real people as well as the NPCs. No pointed elf ears or cartoonish looks. The graphics are outstanding. The music is tops.
This game is definitely worth a try.
Okay, I have been playing AoC off and on since just a few months after release, and I have to say that I was shocked when I came on Amazon and saw how low the rating for this game is. Then I read some reviews and realized that most of them are from very early in the games life. You see, being that it is an MMO, content is updated and debugged live. I can honestly say that being a player for a while now, that the game has grown in leaps and bounds. All of the bugs and lack of content that was experienced toward release has all been changed. Reviews on products like these should have a shelf life. The game is was pretty good before, but it is AMAZING now! I hope to see more people back me on this, because it would really be a shame to see people shy away from giving this game a chance because it didnt get a fair review. Hope to see ya in Hyborea : )
I picked it up 3 weeks ago and am currently a level 35 Cimmerian Conqueror. I checked it out at a buddy’s place when the game launched and although I was impressed by some things, the numerous issues/bugs kept me away. I wasn’t going to shell out 50 bucks and a 15 dollar monthly fee – even though I wanted to bodily fling myself at the game.
Totally different story now. Seriously, AoC has been improved DRAMATICALLY since launch. You just need to be patient for it to go through some collossal updates. Although Funcom can be blamed for not ensuring the current level of quality at launch, I give them kudos for actually fixing the issues and adding new stuff. There can be some minor nuisances here and there but nothing that’ll bring the gaming experience to a screeching halt.
I’ve long been an avid Conan fan and as such I appreciate the faithful recreation of Hyboria – at least the three regions we are exposed to (Cimmeria, Aquilonia and Stygia). A large part of that is because of the art direction and the game engine (which is the best amongst MMORPGs at the moment – Godrays in DX10 FTW). But other details like the top notch voice acting only make Hyboria more alive. Accents are well played and plausible, given the setting. Minor gripe, but once you leave Tortage, where you’ll likely spend the first 20 or so levels, NPCs become mute for the most part (about 1 in every 10 or 15 will actually speak). Musical score is spot-on and well paced.
Combat mechanics are awesome! Its actually engaging and more than just click and sit back. You have to carefully observe the enemy for openings (non-shielded areas) to execute some pretty brutal yet satisfying finishing moves. I was blindly button mashing at first until I realized that there was really an art to executing the fatalities. I for one, like something where real-time skill is required as much as stats.
Multiplayer is a blast. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with very nice and helpful people so far – but then again my experience is restricted to a PVE server. I have heard of at least one PVP server which is chock full of douchebags. Haven’t leveled up high enough to get into the real siege battles but some of the folks i chatted with speak highly of it – a couple of them came back after trying out a year ago and they have been nothing but full of praise for the improvements.
Just to demonstrate Funcom’s dedication to bringing the world of Conan to the masses, I have to mention that the not-so-subtle homage to H.P. Lovecraft brought a smile to my face. Keep an out for it in Stygia. For the uninitiated, this is fun because Conan’s creator Robert E. Howard was actually influenced, to some extent by his friend H.P. Lovecraft.
All in all its a remarkable buy. I know FunCom’s made some mistakes in the past and they almost sound desperate what with free 2 week reactivations for old players (think that expires on July 22nd ‘09) but its a good marketing effort. The game is NOT what it was at launch. It took them a year but they nailed it. Looking forward to the expansion.
This game was everything I expected and more. You tired of waiting week after week for raids in WoW?… Tired of having nothing to do after you’re geared out?.. Try this game. The pvp is great.
I was skeptical about buying collector’s, but I’m a fan of the 40k series so I JUST HAD TO, ya know? The hardcover graphic novel is now sitting on my shelf of prized possesions.

The designers of this game did everything that they could to make it fun. Unfortunately, you cannot dictate fun to people who play online. It is a good game with nice features and exciting realm versus realm fighting. But the rules are rather restrictive, the end game fighting is repetitive. Most nights the ‘war’ is an endless excersise in keep-swapping with zergs basically chasing each other’s tails. I had hoped to see lots of open field warfare and there is some, but most fighting is channeled into keep fights – which can be fun, if that’s what you’re into.
Me, I’ll be moving on to a less restrictive ’sandbox’ type pvp game. But this game will provide several months of fun for anyone who is new to the genre.
Warhammer Online is a great PvP game. You can get in to PvPing right at level 1 and level up through PvP.
Conceptually, Warhammer Online is a stellar game. With a PvP and casual driven experience in the forefront, this is a game that seeks to entertain. Unfortunately, the develops decided to recycle their 9 year old game engine that was previously used in Dark Age of Camelot. The engine lacks many things that make a game such as World of Warcraft addictive and enjoyable. Not only is it hard to tell what abilities you’re using when you use them, but the game runs very poorly even on good computers. The worst part is that even though it runs poorly the graphics aren’t appreciable. The audio is above average but music isn’t utilized nearly enough. A very average MMORPG experience that I cannot recommend personally.
I can’t believe there aren’t more people playing this game. It has beautiful graphics, which I can understand can create a hardship for those without a near top line PC. But I know there are many people like me that have a top line PC that want a game that gives them the performance they desire. The story flows just like a book and the controls are spot on.
Played the game durring launch , but left to wait until they patched the game. Came back to AOC last week, and i have to say im really impressed with the game so far. The community in AOC is really helpful if you want a group for PVE, or go out and kill other’s in PVP. The atmoshere of the game really brings you in with well written stories , and beautiful evnioroments that I keep catching myself wanting to explore more of the area from every propective. Music and sound is awesome to say the least. I have my speakers boming all the time. All the classes i have played so far have been fullfiling and interseting to play. I have only tried 3 classes so far Sin, ranger, and a Tempest Of Set. I have to say as a sin it is sooo fun to come out of nowhere and backstab other player’s or NPC’s with such high burst DPS. Fatalities if you get them off is so rewarding to watch. lol somthing about planting your blade in the back of someones head to end the fight is fun to watch. Again this is a very mature MMO. Im going to end this review with these remarks AOC is fun and you need to give it a try. If you played it before durring launch and left due to the quest killing bug’s. Give it a try again everything i can think of that was broken is fixed now. Content has been added for T8. Pvp ruleset has change to make sure ganker’s dont wait at spawn points. Community is strong.
I honestly don’t get people who review MMOs this way. I guess the whole “If it’s not WOW, it’s crap” crowd is bigger than I thought.AOC offers many things that makes the comparison shallow at best. The graphics are astounding. The group missions are truly awe-inspiring and the guild and consequence system to deal with ganking is both elegant and fun.Don’t listen to other reviewers! With a game this cheap, you should check it out. I loved it!
If you value your money dont waste it on this product. The product deserves 0 stars out of five. Unfortunatly the lowest ranking you can give it in a review is 1.
I went into this game in May of 2008 thinking it could actually complete with warcraft. By the time I left in Jan of 2009. Funcom totally failed to live up to the hype and promises that were made. The first MMO with direct 10x was never released as of early jan of 2009. My biggest issue with it was when you got over level 70 not even 80, there wasnt really much out there to do. Oh the game itself wasnt bad if you dont mine quests up to the mid 50’s after that good luck. and as Somebody already pointed out the selling price of a used one is now .58 cents? Thats bad enough-now it is possible that Funcom maybe able to turn this around, but a month back on G4 the cable channel it was reported that Funcom had problems. For all who want to try this i would see what happens by June of this year, either go back to warcraft, try Lord of the Rings or wait for the next patch of MMO’s to be released Fallen Earth, Star Trek Online or Star Wars which supposely is due around 2011.
I thought this game had too much. it was not fun you had to learn 50 commands just to move your guys forward
I bought this game for my nephew (who is 14) and he played it over at my house. First off…the graphics in the first scene to start the game were great. They were like the pictures that Amazon has shown. But then the game started and the graphics changed. On my parents standard tube tv they were horrible. On my plasma, they were better, but still not very good at all. And then the cutscenes during the games were hideous!…even on my plasma. I have no idea why they wouldn’t use the same type of graphics for all the cutscenes. Now he hasn’t played a whole lot of it, b/c he doesn’t even like the game play…but maybe it includes some more good graphics later.
The game play…so lousy. It was boring, and so repetitive. It is a war/battle sim…and not a good one. Granted, like I said before, he hasn’t played very far into the game. But that was because he got so bored, and disliked the graphics (especially the HORRIBLE cutscenes) that he had no desire to play it any further. I’ve played battle sims before, and I couldn’t even watch this one for very long.
The voices…INCREDIBLY annoying. They repeat the same thing 5 times in a row…and the same voice cuts itself off. I had to turn the sound down while it was being played. And sometimes when they talk…it looks like the old Japanese voice overs where their mouths are moving and it doesn’t go with the voices at all. It reminded me of old school video games..and not good ones.
I would definitely recommend renting this game BEFORE you buy it. It may just save you $50-$60. Or if you really want to buy it to try it, definitely get it used. Its not worth the full price at all. You can get it used for around $20 on ebay if nothing else (I checked b/c he disliked it so much he doesn’t want to keep it).
I do not play video games, but my son-in-law received a game system for the X-box 360 for Christmas. He was in need of games, and when I saw this as a lightning deal, I got it for him, and he has really enjoyed it.
Price: There are several games that are almost exactly like Battle March. Halo Wars, Command & Conquer, Ninety-Nine Nights, and the list continues. This game is okay, but not worth paying more than 20.00 USD.
Graphics: Leaves something to be desired. The characters look like little underdrawn beings without true detail. Not much attention was given to the graphics or design of this game. A basic program obviously.
Gameplay: Nothing special or bad, standard military strategy game. If you beat Command & Conquer or Halo Wars…this ones in the bag.
Controls: Were easily understood. No issues here. Really simple to use.
Scenery: 2D at its best, you will find the game designers did not put much effort into the games scenery.
Overall: I bought it and regret buying it. A waste of my hard earned cash. I will no longer be buying any game that has Warhammer labeled on its cover. Some people may like these filler games, not me. They are filler games, because they take up space.
