miniatures Free Significant Hint

The miniatures game is enjoyable and fun, with a couple of twists in the rules to keep gameplay feeling somewhat novel. To be honest, though, I like the collectibility of the figures as much if not more than the game itself. It is nice to be able to have pieces of the game in the real world without paying the obscenely high prices larger, limited edition figures command. The boosters can get a bit expensive (you are paying about $5 for each figure in the pack, sight unseen), especially if your collection is large and you are looking for a few to round it out (at that point check that large 4-letter auction site), but you are also paying for the same thrill of discovery you have with trading cards, and cards aren’t nearly as fun to look at and sit on your computer desk…

I have to say I was very impressed with these miniatures. They are highly detailed, durable, artistic and colorful. I like the fact that lead is no longer used in minatues, as it is poisonous and not very durable. These plastic figures are fully and beautifully colored, so no painting is required! Each set is different, containing (sort of like collector cards) common, uncommon and rare figures. A collectors list is included. My set had a dozen figures, including three uncommon and one rare figure. Most of the figures in my set were fighter-types, but it did also contain several monsters.
The box set also contains a full sized play map, which is a grid of stone (pictures) which resembles a dungeon floor. It is about two feet by three feet, and can be used for dungeon combat. Six cards are also included with dungeon settings and walls, do add a little more detail to your battles.
Also included are stat cards, with statistics for all the figures. I’m not going to use these, but they could be fun.

As one of the previous reviewers pointed out, there is a large single sided, black and white dungeon tiles fold out;like a folded square poster. It’s bland and generic IMO but it is extremely useful; if they only included two! or three, or four.. Very useful since u can ‘decorate’ them according to your party’s visual range.

Furthermore, the included terrain tiles(postcard quality) are also single sided, exactly 5X8, and all have different settings. You can’t really play on them as they are so small/limited. They serve as a visual aid.

You get 12 miniatures w/ corresponding stat cards(normal)

The rundown, out of the entire collection, 30% ~ 40% stand for ‘player’ characters; humanoid NPCs, etc. So u might end up with 4 ‘player’ characters like me; it depends on what you’re hoping for. The Good!! Large Miniatures(2X2). The Bad, you’ll always get the bear; a wolf would’ve been much better.

For those of you looking to buy your first set, i would recommend the Basic Set(not this one) as you get more, non-randomized, miniatures, solid/set-in coloured tiles, and THE set of dice(expensive if bought seperately; generic ones too).

I give this three stars because of the packaging isn’t as good as the packaging for the previously Entry Pack. Also, the stat cards for these minis are easier to read and the quality is okay. The rulebook is a must have because it has the updates to the Miniatures Handbook. I haven’t played the game yet but it looks easy to play.

The Clone Wars Starter Set is the fifth starter set for the Star Wars Miniatures game. This starter set comes with six figures (more information on the figures is presented below). You can also buy the Clone Wars boosters to add significant variety to the game (there are 40 additional figures in the Clone Wars minis set – and this is the 11th booster set for the Star Wars minis game). I’ll try to write more about the Clone Wars boosters in a separate review, but the rest of this review focuses on the four key reasons why I gave this starter set five stars.

First, each starter set comes with the same six fixed figures, including three light side figures (General Obi-Wan Kenobi, Clone Trooper Commander, and Clone Trooper), and three dark side figures (Count Dooku of Serenno, Security Battle Droid, and Super Battle Droid Commander). The Obi-Wan and Dooku figures are exclusive to the starter set (which means you can’t get them anywhere else). Both of these exclusive figures have amazing stats, special abilities, and force powers (and Obi-Wan also has a super commander effect), so they are definitely worth adding to your collection. And, while the other four figures are available in previous sets, I very much appreciate the fact that you know exactly what you are getting up front. IMPORTANT NOTE: There is a misprint in the Rule Book Glossary re: Obi-Wan’s card. Soresue Style Mastery says “When hit by an attack…,” on the card, but in the glossary it says “When hit by a MELEE attack…” The most recent official ruling is that the card is correct (this has been confirmed by the game’s creator, so feel free to check out their web page for the latest Errata).

Second, and perhaps just as importantly, this set includes two great new maps (“Christophis” on one side, and “Freight Transit Station” on the other side). To me, these two new maps alone are worth the entire price of the starter set (i.e., since the map you pick and play on can influence the game as much as the figures you chose to play with — and both of these maps are very melee figure friendly). At the time this review was written there was no other way to get these maps except to purchase this starter set.

Third, the starter set also contains a book with the quick start and advanced rules (and both are very easy to understand). Further, the Glossary at the end contains the latest definitions for all key words, special abilities, and force powers for every set released up to this point (i.e., the only place all of this information is located in one convenient location).

Fourth, the set also includes a D20, force/damage counters, and pretty much everything you’ll need to play. So, if this is the very first Star Wars minis item you are purchasing, you will still be able to have a fun game right out of the box.

In sum, I think most experienced players will want to purchase this starter set for the exclusive figures and the two maps. However, if you are new to the game and just want to give it a try, this is a very inexpensive and reasonable way to do so.

This is a really neat starter set. My son loved it and loves looking and playing with the set. I guess the only complaint I would have is that the game is too complicated… for me at least. There are lots of rules… almost like chess. I guess once you understand all the rules and learn to apply them it would be enjoyable. I would buy it again… it’s really a neat set.

  6. Ondeck says

My 8 year old son and I have been playing Star Wars Miniatures for a few years now. When we first saw this set we bypassed it for the booster sets. After reading the last review though, I had to get the set to check it out.

If you don’t own any Miniatures, this set has everything you need to start. BUY IT NOW. :)

The map is a great map, and is indeed worth getting.

The Dooku piece is great, adding a force/light saber user to the separatist army (Grievous isn’t really useful in that way.)

The Obi-Wan is also worth getting. I already had a number of Obi-wan’s but the “general” piece that comes with this set has by far the best abilities out of all of them.

This set also comes with two different droids and two different clones.

This is a fun and great start to get in to the star wars miniatures game so have fun with it. :]

What can I say, the kid likes it. Much cheaper online, than in the malls.

This series of dollhouse accessories are incredibly detailed and well made. They are an indispensable addition to the well furnished dollhouse. They may not be suitable for very small children.

  10. Tandon says

I bought these for my nine year old niece, who is just starting to play with her doll-house. She was very happy with the dining room accessories and had a lot of fun deciding where to place them on the dining room table. I think they had a realistic look to them, overall.

It is a nice set and although it does fit with the Melissa and Doug collection, I am sure it would work with other collections as well.

  11. Conway says

The picture shows 3 boxes when in fact you only get 1 box with 3 figures in the box. It’s a little misleading. The picture should only show 1 box or state that you don’t get all 3.

  12. Ignacio says

The figs are detailed and well painted. The game is easy to learn, progresses quickly, and is easy to set up.

One fault: the bases you put the figs on don’t snap on very well. But only nitpickers will feel this hurts the game.

Bottom line: this is another addictive extension of the Warcraft brand. If you don’t want to end up plunking $100+ into this, then steer clear, because if you buy in, you’ll come back for more, guaranteed :)

    Game On!

  13. Akopyan says

this is a great game if you like miniatures, board games, RPG style rollers, etc. It combines the WoW lore and creature set with a timing system that makes the game move a bit slowly at first, but overall makes it a unique play style and a lot of fun.

One of the miniatures (of three in the box) that I have purchased so far arrived disfigured, without a head. It appears to be a manufacturing blunder that slipped through the factory and out to the store.

it still looks like an ogre though…

This game is totally fun, but the booster packs are pretty pricey. 3 figures for $15 is a little much. This is a good deal ($8.25 of this writing), just get more than one to make the shipping worth it.

I first bought this game so that I could use the ships for the roleplaying game, which is no doubt part of why the game was released in the first place. In terms of their use in that respect, they are fantastic but I *wish* there were more ships. Luckily, I hear that a new product may be on the way in 2008.

At any rate, I started playing the game because I was kind of curious what I could do with these ships that I’d bought. I started playing with a few of my friends at my college, and we agreed that the game is fantastic. The rules are pretty simple, as other reviewers have noted, but this helps to avoid ambiguity and prevent loopholes that could lead to game-breaking situations. Instead, the way that you deploy your fleet, choose to order and target your attacks, and how you use your command options really determines the flow of a game. After every game, I can usually point to the critical moment when my strategy either succeeded or failed because of a set of lynchpin moves. That’s how a game should be. Simple enough to keep itself from crashing down around you when a weird combo is made, complex enough to keep it interesting. I think this game is a lot of fun, especially once you’ve explored the finer points of its rules.

  17. Funk says

The ships look great… really great in some cases. Thats why I went and picked up this set and a couple boosters from a local comic store. If you are a star wars fan and want some miniature ships, or if you are a scifi wargamer and need more space fodder, then go ahead and buy the boosters over this — although the inclusion of the two large capitol ships could be useful too.

However, as a game, this product falls a little flat. The rules are fairly simple (too simple in my estimation), and offers few interesting tactical options. I’d recommend buying this game to play only if you want to introduce a younger person into miniatures wargaming.
